Lazada and Shopee changed their commission fees. Can your payout report explain the deduction?

Updated
4 min readView as Markdown

Short answer: Lazada and Shopee introduced updated commission schedules effective 14 August 2026.

The commission is not necessarily one percentage applied to your total sales. It is calculated at order level and may depend on the product category, seller type, programme participation and seller-funded discounts. The commission is also subject to 8% SST.

Your payout summary may show the final amount deducted without showing all the information used to calculate it.

The key question is not only “How much did the platform deduct?” It is “Can I reproduce that calculation?”

Last reviewed: 14 August 2026.

1. What changed?

Key message: Both platforms updated their commission schedules on 14 August.

  • Lazada: Marketplace and LazMall commission rates vary by product category.

  • Shopee: Marketplace and Shopee Mall rates vary by category, subcategory and programme participation.

  • SST: Commission is subject to 8% SST.

Commission is a platform fee on qualifying sales. It is not necessarily the only fee in your settlement.

For example, Shopee states that its commission fee is separate from transaction fees and applicable programme fees.

The exact rate and cutoff treatment should be confirmed in your own Seller Centre.

2. Why might your calculation not match?

Key message: The payout total does not explain the calculation for each order.

Suppose several orders are combined into one payout.

Each order may have a different:

  • Product category or subcategory

  • Applicable commission rate

  • Seller-funded discount or voucher

  • Programme status

  • Commission amount

  • SST amount

If you multiply the total sales by one “usual” percentage, your answer may not match the commission deducted.

That does not automatically mean the platform made an error. It may mean that your calculation is missing order-level information.

3. A simple example

Key message: Even when the rate is the same, the amount it applies to can change.

Imagine three products from the same category, each originally priced at RM100. Assume an illustrative commission rate of 15%.

One product was sold with a RM10 seller-funded voucher.

The commission base would be:

  • Order 1: RM100

  • Order 2: RM100

  • Order 3: RM90 after the seller-funded voucher

Total commission base: RM290 Commission at 15%: RM43.50 8% SST on the commission: RM3.48 Total commission-related deduction: RM46.98

If you simply calculate 15% of the original RM300 product value, you get RM45.

The difference exists because:

  1. The voucher changed the amount subject to commission.

  2. SST was added to the commission afterward.

The payout total alone may not make those two steps obvious.

4. Who needs to care?

Key message: This matters when someone needs to verify or explain the deduction.

A seller who accepts the platform payout without checking it may never notice this issue.

It matters more to:

  • Sellers checking whether platform fees are correct

  • Finance teams explaining why margins changed

  • Accountants reconciling marketplace settlements

  • Anyone investigating an unexpected deduction

To reproduce the fee, they may need an order-level fee report or tax invoice—not only the final payout summary.

5. Three things to check

Key message: Bring the calculation inputs and the charged fee onto the same row.

  1. Find the order-level commission

Match each completed or delivered order with the commission charged.

  2. Confirm the calculation inputs

Check the product category, applicable rate, programme participation and seller-funded discounts or vouchers.

  3. Separate the different deductions

Record commission, SST, transaction fees and programme fees separately. Do not combine everything into one unexplained “platform fees” figure.

The takeaway

The commission change is the news. Being unable to reproduce the deduction from the payout summary is the accounting problem.

Your payout report tells you the result.

Your order-level fee data tells you why.

Before closing August, manually check several orders against the commission and SST shown in Seller Centre. If the numbers do not match, you will already have the information needed to investigate.
